We are now ready to notice how the Holy Spirit affects the life of the individual Christian. Last week we discovered that one of the best and most capable illustrations of the Spirit's relationship to the individual Christian.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty
Sunday, May 29 2011
As we saw last week, Jesus is our primary model for what it means to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit. This was promised in the OT as we looked forward to the coming of the Messiah, and it was fulfilled in the birth, life, and ministry of Jesus. What is left somewhat unexplained in the Bible is the nature of Jesus? dependence on the Spirit in day-to-day life.
Only a child will understand - Jesus and the Holy Spirit
Sunday, May 22 2011
Our study on the Holy Spirit now moves out of the Old Testament and into the New. We have learned that even though the Holy Spirit was not very well-known during the days of the Old Testament, the people of Israel had effectively resisted the work of the Spirit throughout their history.
The Loss of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Sunday, May 15 2011
Duration: 43 mins 26 secs
In the Old Testament, the "spirit of God" was understood as the power,
will, and activity of God himself. As people were enabled to do different
tasks, it could be said that God's spirit was working through them,
whether these people were believers or even
non-believers.

One possible way for a pastor to preach on the Holy Spirit is to gather all
the available information in the Bible and summarize for his audience what he has
found. While this model may be helpful-particularly in the amount of time and energy that can be saved by the pew-sitter-the potential for abuse is rather clear.
Introducing the Holy Spirit
Sunday, May 01 2011
Duration: 55 mins 25 secs
One might say that there has been a curiosity about the Holy Spirit going all the way back to the days of the Bible (?We have not even heard that there was a Holy Spirit!? Acts 19:2). For the modern Christian, a simple review of history reveals that there has been a steady stream of interest in who the Holy Spirit is, with entire denominations forming over the last hundred years while we have tried to sort our way through questions of who He is and what He does.
Rejoicing in the Hope of the Glory of God
Sunday, April 24 2011
Duration: 42 mins 27 secs
The horrors of Good Friday were very reaL Jesus' crucifixion, followed by his three lifeless days in the tomb, left the disciples numb and confused, even questioning the truthfulness of Jesus' identity as Israel's Messiah. There may be no other way to interpret Peter's somber statement in John 21:3, "/am going fishing. "He had nothing more to do, no more to give. His friend of three years was dead, and there was no sign that God was going to change the story line from one of despair into one of victory.
The victory of Easter Sunday was even more real. Though Peter had seen Jesus' empty tomb, he had yet to meet his resurrected Lord. It is interesting that Jesus' initial appearance on that Sunday morning began with a close friend who was not even one of the twelve disciples ...

No one can claim that the Christian message is, in the end, impractical or out-of-touch with daily living. Note how Hebrews 13 begins with three simple points of reminder for these Christians who likely have struggled with the loss of their temple in Jerusalem, and ends with a staggering promise of God?s care in spite of it:

get on with it. Strip down, start running-and never quit!"
I Can't Find Faith in the Dictionary
Sunday, March 20 2011
Duration: 40 mins 15 secs
More than any other chapter in the Bible, Hebrews 11 unwraps individual stories of faith within the lives of very normal people. We all know that faith is a good thing, in other words, but our writer knows that until we see faith in action we may never identify it with ordinary living.
Figuring out Faith
Sunday, February 20 2011
Duration: 31 mins 25 secs
We are now approaching the most famous chapter in Hebrews, often referred to as The Hall of Faith. Chapter 11 will open with the promise that a person cannot approach God without faith (verse 6), and will close with the reminder that the heroes of Scripture were only heroic because of their faith (verse 39). Whatever biblical faith is, it will not come naturally to those who possess and use it. Jesus even hinted that over time, true faith would be a rare human commodity: "When the Son of man comes, will he really find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:8). Yet the concept of faith may be as popular as it ever was, even fashionable ...

Imagine trying to get through a Minnesota winter without an ice scraper for your car. You could do it, but you will have to get rather inventive along the way. We have all tried to use a credit card! Let?s review, one chapter at a time, some of the main points of the book ...
Why Jesus' Sacrifice is Best
Sunday, January 30 2011
Duration: 47 mins 50 secs
As Jews began to believe in Jesus Christ as their Messiah-a minority position, to be sure, among their family and friends-they were systematically expelled from their neighborhood synagogues. These "Christians" were slowly but surely becoming non-Jews, complained the spokesmen of Judaism. Jewish believers continued to worship in the Temple in Jerusalem as best they could, it seems, offering gifts and sacrifices to their now-risen Messiah. But even this privilege would come to an end with the destruction of the Temple in A.D. 70 ...

Hebrews 7 centered its attention on that little known man
Melchizedek. As our attention turns to Hebrews 8, we can tell that the
author had a reason for both mentioning this ancient king of Salem and,
more importantly, moving past or through him: ''Now this is the main
point of the things we are saying .... " (8:1). So the story of Melchizedek
pointed toward something else, something more important, and the
author knew this all along. He used one story to lead us to another.

The Full Meaning of Christmas
Sunday, December 19 2010
The writer of Hebrews believed he was speaking to those who had
come to believe in Jesus Christ, or at least the reality of his incarnation. For these Jews, Jesus was indeed the messiah, meaning that he came to fulfill the meaning of both the Old Testament Scriptures as well as the larger purposes of God in
Israel and throughout the world.
With Loud Cries and Tears
Sunday, December 12 2010
Duration: 37 mins 56 secs
Our study of Hebrews has brought us to one of the most clear
statements of Jesus' humanity in the Bible. The truth of Jesus' divinity
or deity was clarified very early on in this book ("being the brightness of
[God's] glory, and the express image of his person," Heb 1:3) and it has
been important to the writer that Jesus be understood in human terms.
The Danger and Wonder of Entering God's Throne Room
Sunday, December 05 2010
Duration: 54 mins 26 secs
You may have noticed in our sermon series from Hebrews that the
writer of the book has used the story of the Old Testament as a cause for
concern, both positively and negatively. This is because, as a general
rule, those who live ahead of us have something to teach us. Jews were
particularly aware of this truth since their forefathers had been chosen by
God so that the world could learn about God (that is, Israel would be a
mouthpiece for God, Rom. 3: l-2). It followed, then, that God's character
could be muddled or misinterpreted if Israel failed in its task to choose
God in return. And this is precisely what happened. Israel had failed,
many times over, and the world had every reason to wonder who Yahweh
was and how he was to be approached.
Is 'Past Faith' Good Enough? And What about 'Present Failure'? Part 2
Sunday, November 28 2010
Duration: 39 mins 25 secs
In working through the text of Hebrews so far, we have to admit
that the author has been a straight shooter. We are told to not drift away
from the message that God has spoken concerning Jesus Christ (2: 1 ), and
are strictly warned to not replay the scene of Israel's rebellion just after
they crossed over the Red Sea (3:15). While we may interpret this as
being rather negative, the author's point is quite positive-bringing us to
today's text: "There remains a promise of entering his rest" (4:1)!

Getting the Moses Story Right - the Second Time Around
Sunday, October 31 2010
Preachers are told that any good sermon needs to run the fine line between making the audience feel very good while also giving them a strong sense of dis-ease. It appears the writer of Hebrews 1 and 2 accomplished this goal! For in these opening chapters Jesus was not only said to exist "above" all divine beings-making him what we could call Yahweh-class in existence, no little shocking for the good Jew-he was also said to be a human being with real flesh and blood. For a world in which the gods were expected to remain distant and remote, this is shocking news. It was as though the Creator himself showed up and walked among us, proving that he wanted a sincere and meaningful relationship with those he created.
The Necessity of Jesus' Life and Death
Sunday, October 24 2010
Duration: 43 mins 35 secs
Last week we noticed that Jesus was called our "author" of salvation (Heb. 2:10). The Greek word archegos can be variously translated as head, chief founder, or originator-with one basic idea clinging to the word in all its uses. An archegos is someone who begins something in order that others may enter into it. He may "found" a city so that others can live in it. He may "begin" a family so children may be born into it.
Receiving Jesus on His Terms
Sunday, October 17 2010
Duration: 39 mins 53 secs
Last week we noticed that the "reliable word" of Hebrews 2:1 was the story of God's dealings with the Jewish nation. Through Abraham a family was chosen, given a promise, saved from trouble, offered spiritual and material guidance, challenged to obedience, and ultimately punished for disloyalty. Yet word of salvation still hung in the air, and it is into this world of anxious waiting for God to act that Jesus eventually comes.
How Not To Quit

Jesus' Companions
Sunday, September 26 2010
Duration: 40 mins 23 secs
The book of Hebrews began by telling us what is now true about Jesus Christ: He is the Father's chosen one, the agent and heir of creation, the "brightness" of God's essence, and the ruler seated with the Father (1: 1-3). This is the real Jesus, in other words, quite different from the one predicted to come as "a tender shoot, like a root out of parched ground" (Isaiah 53:2). Christ's resurrection and ascension proved beyond doubt his true identity, leading the Apostle Paul to admit, "Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him thus no longer!" (2 Cor. 5:16).
The Real Jesus Christ

The challenge of directly studying a book of the Bible in a series

honest concerns, and today's sermon will get right at these questions.
When Does Faith Become Works?
Sunday, August 29 2010
Faith is a requirement of the Christian experience, both as the means of entrance into God's kingdom and as a virtue to be enjoyed and developed after choosing to follow Christ. Trying to determine exactly what faith is, however, proves difficult since the word has become mired in the dark waters of unintended connotation and innuendo.
Send the Multitudes Away
Sunday, August 22 2010
According to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, 94 percent of all existing churches have less than five hundred attendees, and two-thirds of these have less than one hundred. What if God's plan for most churches is to be small? What if the best model for the church is to stay under five hundred people, and even closer to the tipping point of one hundred fifty?

On Earth as it is in Heaven
Sunday, July 18 2010

Thy Will Be Done
Sunday, July 11 2010
It has been said, "We all want to know God's will, but few of us want to do it." With this in mind, we immediately realize that in the Lord's Prayer Jesus laid down the challenge that we ask for God's will to done - not just known.

Sunday, June 06 2010
The "Our Father", the "Paternoster", the "Lord's Prayer" is the central prayer of the Christian faith. It is unique in both its historical popularity and its original appearance as a prayer recommended to us directly by Christ himself.
